Up until November 1989 a concrete wall acted as a barrier between the West and East Berlin.
This wall that split the great central European city of Berlin defined the ideological separation between the market economies of West and the State controlled economies of the East.
West and East Germany are now united and Berlin has regained its place as the capital of a modern and prosperous country that has become the economic powerhouse of Europe.
A new wall however now divides Europe. This is a wall the divides the productive countries of Northern Europe and the countries of the south.
Southern Europe and to an extent France have suffered from years of political mismanagement. The peoples of these countries have become accustomed to a nanny state that takes away the creativity from the greatest asset a country has. Its very own people.
What has become known as the non core states of the Eurozone and especially Greece can be described as having:
A bloated public sectors are over staffed by an unproductive and overpaid work force.
The State owned industries are a drag rather than a contributor to the national treasury.
Working practices that restrict the creativity of their populations.
Deep structural issues that are in need of reforming.
The inability and an unwillingness for these countries tax collection services to carry out their function.
A culture of corruption that holds back economic growth.
A huge black market economy that does not contribute to the national treasury.
Germany does not have all the answers. However if the Greek government wanted to take a blueprint of how implement advanced and effective economic and political models then all they need to do is to take a look what is happening in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and along the Rhine.
That the German Chancellor Angela Merkel invited the Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras to Berlin was also very fitting. There is talk that there is a need for bridge building between German and Greece. What is really needed is a bulldozer that breaks down wall that divides these two countries. Just like the bulldozers that once divided East and West Berlin.
Monday’s meeting was the final chance for Germany and Greece to find common ground. Lets just hope the spirit of November 1989 is found which through compromise and a lot of sacrifice reunites Europe’s two halves.

Yemen has played a relativity small role in the affairs of the Arab world in recent years. However over the past few months this country this has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Yemen has had a long history of civil strife that is caused by tribal and religious tensions. These tensions have come back to the fore in the shape of a conflict that is increasingly taking on the form of a civil war.
The two protagonists in this conflict is predominately Sunni led rulinggovernment which is battling Houthi rebels who belong to the Shia branch of Islam.
The Houthi rebels it has been claimed are backed by the Iran have made rapid gains against Government forces. With the Yemeni capital Sanaa having already fallen to the rebels the Houthi have now advanced further south and are now posed to take the financial center of Aden.
This move has concerned the Saudi Government enough to take action joining the fight against the rebels. With the battle for Yemen is now increasingly turning between a proxy war between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran, the government in Riyadh felt the need to intervene.
The Saudi move has sent the price of Oil spiraling higher. Yemen is an insignificant producer of Oil with a share of under 0.2% of global output. However Yemen and the port city of Aden has a controls one of the most strategically sensitive locations for global shipping. This being the Bab el-Mandeb strait. A closure of this straight would stop tankers heading from the Persian Gulf to the Suez Canal.
Saudi Arabia has for some time tried to dominate and push down the price of Oil. However history tells us that no one nation can dominate and control its own destiny all of the time.
The crisis is Iraq and Syria has created a Shia dominated area to the north of the Arabian peninsula whilst the events in Yemen threaten to create a Shia led administration in the south.
With the Saudi’s now feeling increasingly encircled by allies of Iran can the Saudi government continue to sustain a policy of low oil prices as it claims indefinitely?
